La Gloria (the Glory)
(Giuseppe; Berto)
A great Italian author whose inspiration and sensibility anticipated the discovery of Judas's Gospel. The novel's protagonist is Judas and his self-questioning, a loved disciple of God and a man pre-determined to achieve Glory. Indeed, throughout his penetrating auto-interrogation there is a sense of the irresolved doubt that pervades our everyday existences as part of history. We too have been pre-chosen, we too have to sacrifice ourselves at the cost of the distain of future generations, we too have to rise to the goals that Destiny has set for us, to achieve the ultimate sacrifice without any truth or certainty, to be heroes stained by ignominy, all for the love of a Truth which we will never be allowed to know, but for which we may only search with all our powers. That is, all of us, within a providential plan which is at once both obscure and illuminating, are Judas.
