A Fistful Of Sky
(Nina Kiriki Hoffman)
Nina Kiriki Hoffman is a compelling author in the supernatural/fantasy world. In this particular novel she introduces a young lady, Gypsum, going through life-changing experiences that noone in this world would ever imagine happening. Gypsum and her father were the only people in the household that seemed to not go through such experiences until one weekend that the family went away for the weekend. The experience was a transition that made her and the rest of her family, apart from her father, able to perform magic. We aren't talking the typical magic tricks you see in kids shows like pulling a rabbit out of a hat. We are talking like transforming your physical image, or producing mass amounts of bread, or even send someone tumbling on the ground. Gypsums family was gifted with such magic that confused Gypsum. See, Gypsum felt as if she was cursed. She always felt this tenseness build up in her shoulders and she had to instantly perform her magic or she would fall deeply ill. She called it curse power because sometimes it would last 6 hrs or it could be 6 days, and she never knew if the outcome would be good or bad. Her family had regular magic and they could perform whenever they wanted, it never built up and they could choose the outcome. Gypsum had to take time to learn the magic power. She had her Uncle Tobias for this. Gypsum also had a sidekick, Altria, that appeared whenever Gypsum would call for her. This novel was rated a 4 out of 5 stars and it deserves such a rating. The end of every chapter makes you want to keep reading, like every good book. This book brings you back to when you were a teenager and helps you imagine what you would do if you had such power. Creates an exciting read!!
