You won't believe this author was a teenager. Christopher Paolini graduated when he was fifteen and had Eragon published and was working on the second book of the series, Eldest, when he was nineteen. This series is NOT just children's literature although published by a book publisher for young readers. A maturity of writing and story development make this series an instant classic.In his "Inheritance" series, book 1, An elf is attacked and throws a blue stone through magic to another place to save it. Eragon is a normal teenager in a small village Carvahall in Alagaesea living with his uncle and cousin. Eragon finds a blue rock that he brings home, thinking he can sell it and help the family. Before he can the rock turns out to be a dragon egg and a beautiful blue dragon named Saphira is born. Eragon keeps her hidden from his uncle and cousin and raises her out in the forest. One day the very horrible Ra'zac arrive in the village looking for the egg. Dragon eggs only hatch when the unborn dragon recognizes a person they want for their rider. Most of the dragon riders have been slain years before and the only ones left are the king, Galbatorix and his evil riders. The Ra'zac travel out of town and burn down the farm house where Eragon lived. His uncle is killed. Luckily his cousin Roran is gone. Eragon escapes with the help of the old storyteller in the town, Brom, who Eragon finds out is a former dragon rider. Brom and Eragon escape the Ra'zac and travel south, with Brom teaching both Eragon and Saphira in Rider lore and laws. The Ra'zac follow them and use other odd creatures to capture them, ruining many villages in the process. Galbatorix is very determined to gain this new rider and dragon. With a host of inventive characters and landscapes, this young author has the makings of another J.R.R. Tolkien. His fantasy/hero quest type story is a fun read. If you like elves, dragons and magic of all kinds you will enjoy it.
