This is the second book in the Dexter serial murderer series. The serial killer being Dexter. In this original concept, Jeff Lindsay introduces us to his main character, Dexter Morgan, in the first book of the series: Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Dexter was a foster child who came to stay with Harry Morgan who was a Miami cop. Harry recognized the tell tale signs that Dexter would be a serial killer and he made a decision. If it had to be then Dexter should use his proclivity for good. He trains Dexter in forensics and how not to get caught. Then he turns Dexter's talent into removing other serial killers from society.Dexter, although he really hates the sight of blood (its so messy) is a blood splatter specialist. He tries very hard to fit into an emotional world, but he often just doesn't get it. Sergeant Doakes has suspicions about Dexter and begins to follow him. Dexter must hold off doing his favorite activity with his Dark Passenger for a time and act as normal as possible. To that end he begins dating Rita, who has two children. Dexter never liked drinking, not understanding people giving up control, but Rita thinks she needs to bring him a beer and cuddle with him. He must act normal so he drinks and cuddles. It is a curious experience for him. Rita and her two children were abused by her ex-husband and just happy to find someone who is kind. Before Dexter realizes it, he is engaged. At least it makes him look normal to Doakes. He actually likes the children, and is pleasantly surprised to find that they are quite a bit like him.Dexter's foster sister, Deb Morgan finds love with a federal agent who is tracking a really horrible serial killer. A man is found alive, but in the most horrific way. Every thing has been removed. He is basically a body and a head. His eyelids are gone, his arms and his legs. His tongue is gone and so is his mind. The torturer removed pieces of the person over a series of weeks, and the man knew what was happening to him. Dexter happily helps look for this artist. He is awed by the way this killer works. When Deb's federal agent disappears and it looks like the killer has him, Deb is frantic for Dexter's help, worried about how much of her lover will be left when he is located.You will love to read this series of books. You can't help but love this serial killer. He is surprisingly amusing.
