GEOSSYNTETICS – A RESEARCH OF THE COMPRESSIBILITY IN NON-WOVEN GEOTEXTILES THICKNESS DURING IN-PLANE FLOW TESTS AND CONVENCIONAL TESTS.

How these  compressibilities appeared changing some procedures in differents tests to measure the geotextile`s thickness.

This article shows the compressibility of geotextiles on the transmissivity apparatus and convencional tests. Three types of needle punched fabrics are used varying the mass per square unit (200 g/m2, 300 g/m2 and 400 g/m2) for  both geotextile tests.

For alone fabrics, which the square dimension is 10 cm, primary measures of geotextile tichkness was studied according brazilian standart test (NBR 12569). Althrough of this test, datum are been obtained as well the shape of geotextile thickness under compressives  stress for specific stipulated time of measure. These samples were non-saturated and were submited in a nominal stress of 2 kPa. A simple compression load machine was utilized to realize this test,  denominated  of “test one”. The lectures of geotextile`s thickness are been realized until the displacements arrived the a constant value.

However, another tickness research (test two) was realized  in satured samples under confining stress varying for 20 kPa to 200 kPa. The test was realized in transmissivity apparatus for different samples dimensions (20 x 50 cm). For each load applied, lectures of the tickness of geotextiles was realized  within time period of 15 to 3600 seconds.

These two differents compressibilities tests realized with the geotextiles prove that the compressibility shape of goetextile were very influenced for the time-assent-weight and time-displacement-load. For the minimun load applied the geotextile peformance tends to maximum change in your tichkness  for both methods studied. Maximum compression tests loads tend to horizontal assinthotic curves in transmissivity tests. This can be explained, monitoring the thickness comportament under load for these tests studied.

At the present, there are few brazilian studies realized with geosynthetics monitoring your stiffness comportament. This fact is very important to auxiliate the influence of the tichkness in the hidraulic performance of the synthetic materials. Thus, in the ressearch is showed the importancy  to know the ideal work tickness of the geotextiles to filter and drain design applications.     This paper was sended to “Portuguese-Brazilian Geotechnical Congress” that will realized in this year, at Coimbra-Portugal.
