Blow Fly
(Patricia Cornwell)
"Blow Fly" is a continuation of the Scarpetta saga. Kaye Scarpetta has given up her job as Virginia's Chief Medical Examiner. She has had emotional set backs in previous novels and it has culminated in change of life. She was almost murdered by a man known as "Wolfman" because of his condition of which makes him grow fine hair on his face and body in the book "Black Notice". She is dealing with the death of her one true love, Benton Wesley who died a horrible death of torture. Her niece Lucy is always on the edge of disaster and her professional life has been dragged under scrutiny with the death of a deputy chief. Pete Marino, her friend and a murder investigator, meets with a man named Tom Haviland. Tom is really Benton Wesley, Kaye's long lost love. Pete and Lucy both knew that Benton was alive and no one has spilled the beans to Scarpetta. She is still devastated three years later. She has packed up her home and moved to Florida where she is consulting for a living. Rose, her ever faithful secretary, has moved with her. The Wolfman has been writing to Kaye from prison, hoping she will be the doctor to admister the fatal dose for his execution. Marino intercepted the letter. The Wolfman's twin brother, Jay, is not afflicted with the same thing his twin has. Jay is exceptionally handsome, and exceptionally twisted. Kaye had a brief fling with him in Paris, not knowing his real identity. Now Kaye is being asked to consult on a case that will bring her into the vicinity of Jay and the serial murders he is committing while thinking about Kaye. The stage has been set in previous books, the curtain rises, and the story takes off with a roar. If you are already a fan, you will not want to miss this book. A rare glimpse into the vulnerability of Scarpetta and the evil she deals with on a daily basis. If you have never read a Scarpetta novel, let me tell you what you have missed. As the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia you are given a 360 degree look into the murder investigations she handles, and insider workings of investigative procedures and processes. It is CSI with a personal twist. It is Quincy with more heart. Once you start on Scarpetta's saga you will be hooked and will look diligently for the next book. Her personal life breathes life into the medical mysteries. I recommend starting at the beginning, but if you begin with Blow Fly, you will still enjoy it.
