A Map Of The World
(Jane Hamilton)
Alice lived on the farm with Howard and the girls. It was Howard's dream to spend his days milking cows, growing gardens, and cleaning his big white barn. Though they were both from the city, Alice shared his dream with him. The old Wisconsin farm was their home with its' colorful history and artifacts in the attic. Alice's best friend Theresa lived just across the way with her husband Dan and their two girls. They watched each other's children and shared a lot of good times. But the day that Theresa and Dan's girls came over to play and swim in the pond something happened that would change everything forever between the families. Besides being a farm wife, Alice was a part-time school nurse. She administered meds to sick kids, took their temps, and checked for head lice. It was only three hours out of her day. It helped them make ends meet on the farm. But Robbie Mackessy would change all that. Association with this troubled child would start a chain of events that would further destroy the fabric of the lives of Alice and her family. Alice was ashamed that she had gotten so angry at the troubled Robbie that she had actually slapped his face. It was child abuse and she could lose her job if anyone knew of the incident. Little did she know that there was something much worse to fear in the offing. How could Alice ever forgive herself for the incident that she was involved in with Theresa and Dan's child? How could her best friend ever forgive her for what happened that day at their farm? She shut down. Howard tried to get her moving again but she was living in a mental haze. He needed help with the girls and the farm but she couldn't focus. He tried to motivate her but she was unresponsive; lost in her depression. Howard didn't know how to proceed. He and Alice had always had a plan and a routine. She took care of the house and the girls and he milked the cows and took care of the farm. He couldn't do it all, but if she kept being unresponsive he would have to somehow. Theresa and Dan had a pretty good life until the situation happened with Lizzy and Alice's family. How could they ever get past it? It had started a chain of events that would never be resolved. The two families had been close. Now the momentum of what had occurred threatened their relationship forever. Theresa turned to her faith and Dan just never came home to deal with it. This book shows what could happen to anyone who is in a position of responsibility with children. It shows how life could change in one instant when one is not vigilant or focusing for a second. One event triggers an entire chain of events and there seems to be no end to the chaos it brings.
