Publicidade
When one thinks of literature is the time of Queen Victoira, one thinks of Tennyson. His father was rector of Someraby, Lincolnshire, where Alfred was born. The boy went on to Trinity College, Cambridege, where he became friendly with Arthur Hallam. The pair tralvelled in Europe in 1832, then in the following year, young Hallam died. His death prompted Alfred to begin work on the famous 'In Memoriam' (published anonymously in 1850). In the same year (1833) he published a collection of poems that included 'The Lotos Eaters' and 'A Dream of Fair Womem'. A Still more notalbe collection followed in 1842, that included the Morte D' Arthur. The Prime Mimister, Peel, settled a state pension of $ 200 of him, so that in 1850 when Wordsworth died, Tennyson was his natural successir as poet laureate. Now he was in a position to write great poems about great events. The 'Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington' and 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' (were just two such poems). In Juneof the same year, Tennyson married Emily Sellwood, to whom he had been engaged for 17 years.
Tennyson was raised to the peerage by Queen Victoria in 1884. He was a great favourite of hers, as he was with thousand of her subjects.
