My Sister's Keeper is the book which made Jodi Picoult shoot to fame and since then she has had many best selling books including: The Pact, Salem Falls and Perfect Match. My Sister's Keeper is a book which gets you gripped from the start, it tells a story in a very creative way from all of the characters' points of view both in the past and present. When reading this book you really feel as though you know each character very well. Kate has leukemia which is not curative. She relies on constant blood transfusions to ensure that she will survive and fight off all the various infections and problems she occurs. Her parents had a genetically manipulated baby- Anna- to ensure that Kate always had a perfect genetic match for her various procedures. Anna, however, feels as though she has no say over the painful operations she has to endure in order to make her sister live and so decides that the only way she can stop this happening is to sue her parents. Her parents a mortified at having their daughter sue them and also at having to face the fact that without Anna, Kate will most likely die. The novel goes through the court-case procedure, delves into the past and gives a great insight into the different coping mechanisms of parents. Although this book is based on a very serious illness there is also some light humour which makes the book more managable. When reading this book it is very hard to put it down, it has the ability to make you want to read more to find out what happens. A fantastic read.
