Beginners Cookbook
(Fiona Watt)

This book is for any wannabe chef who decides it might be time to enter into the world of cookery. That?s not to say that you have to be a culinary chef, quite the opposite in fact.
I found this book by chance and decided to buy it for my fourteen year old son. He is no budding chef, but he had begun to take a nominal interest in some of the recipes I used in my own kitchen.
The beautifully photographed illustrations of recipes and the easy to follow step by step guide are the first step to encouraging anyone to venture into the kitchen.
From the moment the book was opened he was rearing to go! He began rather tentatively by creating a simple minestrone soup (which we have made many times since) and a traditional sponge cake. Following the success of these two dishes he ventured into little more complicated dishes such as meatballs in tomato sauce and a marble cake, (all created from scratch).
In an age of computer games and television which threatens to mesmerize any child or adult alike to the couch, how can we expect them to carry out the simple art of boiling an egg or even creating something that does not come contained in a plastic microwave wrapper?
My son attends an all boys school where it appears that cookery is strictly off the menu of curriculum subjects. And this I fear is something that happens throughout many secondary schools, mixed or otherwise.
Most children these days are unable to recognise a particular vegetable let alone know how to prepare it and eat it, but with the help of this book, they are able to create from scratch an appetizing meal that will not only tickle the taste buds but puff out their chest with sheer pride!
The extensive range of recipes will take you from the simplest salad to a more exotic spiced rice dish, or a homemade pizza base that can be covered with an array of toppings. Many recipes include vegetable dishes than can be used alongside the traditional English Roast recipe or a dish on its own for any aspiring vegetarian. Afternoon tea will never the same once you have crated homemade scones, marble cake or pecan slices, to name but a few.
I would also recommend this book for any young adult who is leaving home to attend college or university, even someone who is newly married and setting up home for the very first time and dreads the thought of a diet of beans on toast or ?pop up toasties?!
It?s reasonably priced and would make an idea stocking filler.
