(Mickey Josephson)
--continued from previous blog: 7 ?Mom,? he whispered, then closed his eyes and didn?t answer the phone when Alex called the next morning. The apartment intercom buzzed and he rushed out of bed ? ?Hello-hello.? he said, ?Ah, Mr. Martine, Mr. Chew here. I?m Mr. Kraemer?s friend,? a voice yapped. ?Oh, yeah, what time is it?? ?Nine ? minute ? ten.? ?Oh, I be downstairs, fifteen minute. Syeh ? Syeh.? ?OOOOOKaaaayyy.? He took a quick shower, threw on pants and shirt ?Los Angeles style, locked the apartment door and went into the street. He rubbed his eyes and got into Chew?s small convertible. ?I am Korean, Mr. Martine.? The car jerked forward. ?May I call you Johnny?? ?Is that a proposal?? He didn?t smile; the car went through Santa Monica Boulevard into Beverly Hills. ?How well do you know Mr. Kraemer, Mr. Chew?? ?I don?t know him. I work with Mr. Schumacher.? His face appeared strained, as if someone else had command over him. ?We go to Pacific Palisades. I show you property,? he said abruptly and drove off. ____ ?Look Johnny,? he pointed. ?Look, look ? this land, twenty-five feet wide by one-hundred feet. Price only one million dollar.? ?Too much,? Johnny replied. ?What else you show me?? he watched the seagulls dive into the ocean. ?Nothing else West Side. We go Hollywood Hills, prices cheaper there.? They drove into Hollywood not far from Alex?s Mount Olympus home. He gaped at the perpendicular slope Chew Pointed at, ?What ? what do you want me to do with this?? ?Only $20,000.? ?Really.? ?Anxious seller, he need money, you build two houses and sell - $400,000 each house.? ?Sure, with that slope? It needs a road up there. All right, I?ll go look.? He got out and climbed up the hill. Chew called out, ?Look.? He pointed at the Los Angeles skyline, then to the elegant hillside homes ? like a bad kabuki actor. Johnny nodded, slid down the slope, and went into Chew?s car. ?This property belong Johnny.? ?Wise, old Chinese, I mean Korean man tell you that?? ?Ha-Ha Johnny, I write up offer. I know you want. How you refuse?? Chew gave Johnny a contract after filling in the blanks. He shook his head. ?What wrong, Johnny?? ?It?s the same old nonsense,? and he put the contract aside and wrote a $10,000 check payable to Chew?s Real Estate Company. ?One condition, it?s subject to a clear and marketable title. Wise, old Chinese ? I mean Korean man, whisper great secret to me.? ?What? You crazy, Johnny.? He looked at the check. ?Wise Korean man whisper to me, you crazy build here. Buy cheap, take big chance.? ?Oh-Oh,? Chew replied, looking first at Johnny then to the check. ?Maybe big man rewards you.? ?Maybe.? ?Okay,? he touched Johnny?s hand, ?you my man ? very special man.? ?I am?? ?Ha-ha.? Chew called him the next day, told him the offer was accepted and Johnny dropped the phone. Two weeks later the deal closed. It was like winning the lottery. Something was definitely wrong; everything was too easy. He was staking out the property, to show where the houses would be built when ? BEEP-BEEP-BEEP. He turned. ?Excuse me, sir, is that-there your land?? He glanced at the flatbed truck parked at the curb. ?Yeah, that?s my property.? ?Oh, then you must be Johnny Martine, I was sent to see you? ? he was out of the truck and walking toward him. ?I?ve been watching you. You?re a very serious dude. Yes sir, very serious dude.? ? they were eyeball to eyeball. ?Who sent you?? he glanced at the tractor. ?Mr. Chew,? his face creased, stretching his bright red cheeks. ?Oh.? ?Ah, yeah, he did send me.? ? then nervously he whirled a hat. ?Yes sir, I want you to pray with me,? he went on, putting his head down. ?Please, go over the hill into the San Fernando Valley where the film studios are,? and he pointed to the northwest. ?And make your audition there.I don?t have time for nonsense.? His face turned deadly serious. ?I come to build a road up there.? ?And Mr. Chew sent you?? ?Yes sir.? ?Can you do it?? ?Sir, I can do anything,? he said, looking at his hands. ?I have the power in these hands to do anything.? ?Hey, are you on drugs?? He frowned, looked at the sky, and raised his hands. ?By the power in me I can move mountains.? Johnny sighed ? ?But I only pay $100.00 per day.? ?Don?t worry about that, I?ll unload the truck.? He must be on drugs. ?And Mr. Chew sent you. . . or was it Mr. Kraemer?? ?Don?t know, it?s a big company. AUTHORS NOTE: FOR NOTHING I CAN'T COMPLAIN. Shugh. CONTINUED ON NEXT BLOG.
