Johnny?s sister bought a fashionable home in Great Neck, Long Island. He went to see her on Easter Sunday; she was in her garden pruning azalea bushes. He honked a horn and smiled, ?You made a good investment for $15,000? he said, glancing at the house.
She didn?t smile and started walking inside.
?Aren?t you goner say Happy Easter?? he called out.
She turned ? he could see daggers in her eyes.
?This is Easter,? he called out, and then he watched her leave the door open and go inside.
Music was playing when he entered the dining room. ?Johnny you?ve destroyed your life,? she said, appearing unexpectedly in the kitchen doorway.
He sighed, glanced at the flowers lying on the dining room table, utensils neatly placed between the chinaware.
?I talked to Gisela, she told me what happened.?
?Did she??
?She ? ? she looked at the ceiling, then him.
. . . ?Tom O?Neil is dead, Johnny, leave him in peace.?
He nodded and turned away. ?She had an affair with him, Maria.?
?All right ? if that?s what you believe, then that?s what you believe,? she said, putting hot bread on the table. ?Are you going to eat with us??
?I have some place to go. I just came to wish you a happy Easter.?
?You?re welcome here, Johnny.?
He nodded, and then looked at the family picture on the wall.
?My children have big mouths.?
?You think I?m part of the Mafia??
?No. No.?
?Where?s the family??
?In church. I?m going to the eleven o?clock mass.?
?Johnny, talk with her one last time??
?No, it?s over.?
?She said she doesn?t know who?s calling your house.?
?I?m putting the house up for sale.?
?Okay, okay. . . . Johnny? ? she tried to smile, then she turned to him. ?Oh, Alex called here,? she said, walking to the dining room table and resetting the napkins that were already neatly set.
?Alex??
She turned to him. ?He wants you to visit him in
Los Angeles.?
?Did you tell him about Gisela??
?Yes.?
He turned away.
?He wants to help.?
?Help ? where was he when we needed help??
?Forget that ? it was a long time ago.?
?No, I can?t forget it.?
?That was between them, Johnny,? she said, turning a salad.
?I promised mother.?
?She?s dead, Johnny!?
?He didn?t love her.?
She dropped a fork and went to him. She raised the palm of his hand and kissed it. ?Go see Alex in California before you break up the marriage.?
His eyes grew dim. ?I?ll think about it.?
A pot whistled on the stove and she hurried to the kitchen.
?Johnny,? she called out.
?What.?
?Your partner.?
?My partner. . . . Kraemer?? His eyes shifted from side to side.
?How did you find him??
?What?s the difference how I found him??
She stared at him.
He shrugged his shoulders, watching her put food on the table.
?I have to go.?
She looked up surprised.
?Johnny.?
?Hey, I worked my ass off for three years, did everything right. I would have lost the deal ? you understand??
The church bells started to ring and the phone rang.
?We?re home,? a voice called out.
They looked at each other and she picked up the phone.
?Hello,? she clutched the phone tightly then handed it to him.
. . . ?Mr. Kraemer.?
