(MIckey Josephson)
Path of Deception by Mickey Josephson CHAPTER 2 Shame, blame, and regret had its price. . . . Johnny hardly slept. The next day, the phone hardly stopped ringing. ?Gisela? . . . Who is this?? He slammed the phone down. A late model Ferrari parked in his driveway. A redheaded man came to the door and he opened it. ?You be the liar, I mean lawyer.? ?Bellman,? he said, ?Louie Bellman.? Then he brushed past Johnny and went inside. He sat on the couch, lit a cigar, and the phone rang again. The lawyer glanced at it, and Johnny picked it up. Nobody answered. He put it down and glanced at Bellman ? ?Must be my wife.? Bellman?s cigar smoke clouded the room. ?Ah, would you like some coffee?? ?Sure,? he said, removing a toy from between the pillows ? ?Who?s this belong to?? ?He left with his mother last night,? Johnny said, walking into the kitchen. Bellman squinted at the wedding picture on the wall ? Oh, I see.? He came back and handed Bellman a cup. ?What?s the deal counselor?? The phone rang. ?Damn.? It rang once and stopped. RING. ?What the ?? It stopped. ?Is it all right if I call my client?? ?Sure, sure.? Johnny left, and when he returned, Bellman hastily put the phone down. ?Clients want everything today,? he said. ?What?s going on counselor??? he stared at the phone. ?My client wants in on your deal.? The stout redheaded man flicked his cigar. ?Really? . . . Who?? He smiled. Birds unexpectedly nestled on the windowsill. What do those dumb birds want? Johnny thought. Then he turned to Bellman, ?You seem very sure about this guy.? ?I am.? The birds flew onto the porch; Johnny grabbed birdseed and went outside. ?Why does he want my project?? he called back. ?Well, if you?re not interested.? ?No, I didn?t say that.? A bird flew onto his arm. ?Hey, see that,? and smiled at Bellman. ?All right, all right?let?s talk with him.? The bird flew off, and he curiously looked after it. ?Wise decision, Johnny.? The phone rang; he rushed inside and picked it up. ?Gisela?? . . . Papers suddenly flew off his desk. ?Just a minute,? he said, looking at Bellman leave. ?Set a meeting with . . . whoever.? Bellman nodded, closed the front door and got into his Ferrari. ?Gisela, why did you keep calling here and hanging up? . . . I don?t believe you.? Bellman raced the engine, the birds scattered. ?What do you mean you didn?t call here and hang up.? The Ferrari skidded out the driveway. ?Are you coming home??
