This Completes Chapter I

Tom O?Neil should have been in Queens or Albany New York this time of year. The newspaper said there were unanswered questions about money given him by a Queen?s New York contractor.
On their way over to the O?Neil house the next evening, Johnny suggested to Gisela they don?t stay too long. He had problems too ? the City of New York was demanding he start construction or risk losing the
New York City lease.
?Johnny, is that lawyer coming tomorrow giving you the money??
He shrugged.
Tom?s blood shot eyes cast from side-to-side when he opened the front door. He motioned them into the dining room.

?Johnny, Gisela, come in. . . . Everything is ready. Sit down,? Alice said, pouring wine.
?Grrrrrrr.?
?Tom, put the dog outside. . . . She stared at him, ?Tom.?
?Hm ? yeah,? then he got up and took the dog onto the patio.
?Think he?ll be all right??
Gisela shrugged.
?You?re goner love my linguine, Johnny.?
?Sure, sure, Alice. ?What did you all do when I was in New York??
She stood there brazenly, standing in the kitchen doorway, her hands on her hips. ?Played games.?
?What??
?See what you missed,? Tom said, closing the patio door. How about some scotch, Johnny??
?No,? he glanced at the wine glass.
?What?s happening with your project??
?Needs money.?
He poured a scotch.
?Grrrrrrrrrrrr,? the dog glared through the patio doors at Johnny.
?Shut up ? come here Alice.?
?Who?s going to serve the food, Tom??
?I?ll help you.?
?Oh, thank you, Gisela.?
Tom?s eyes followed Gisela into the kitchen.
?What?s going on Tom??
He looked away, disguising his thoughts. Then he turned back and shook his head. ?People enjoy what I?m going through. Do you know that, Johnny??
?That?s not what I mean.?
He looked away.
?There, I hope you all like it.? Alice said, putting hors d?oeuvres on the table. ?And after dinner we have a special treat. We?re all going to play Path of Deception.?
?No, Alice.?
She looked at Tom and gritted her teeth.
?What have you guys been doing without me??
The doorbell rang, and Tom rushed to answer it.
Gisela almost dropped the plate of linguine when she heard shouts from the hallway.
The door slammed.
?Why don?t those people leave him alone??
?What people, Gisela??
He came back.
?Can I help??
He glanced at Johnny and shifted his eyes from side to side. ?No, just some real estate broker who wants to list my house for sale,? he said, and poured himself another scotch.
?Did they want you to play Path of Deception, Tom??
?Don?t get sarcastic, Johnny.?
He gaped at Gisela.
?That?s the game we?re going to play, Johnny.?
?Enough about that game, Alice.?
?You need to get hold of yourself, Tom.?
?You don?t ever want to play that game, Johnny.
. . . It will destroy you. It will destroy everyone, if it?s not stopped,? he said.
?The only one I see it destroying is you, Tom.?
He stared at her, enraged.
Johnny frowned, took a deep breath and leaned against Gisela?s leg. ?That feels good,? he said, and pushed linguine into his mouth. ?Tell me more about the game??
?We were all playing it the other day,? Alice said, nonchalantly.
?Where, on the boat??
?Johnny!? Gisela moved her leg away.
They all looked in different directions.
He searched Alice?s eyes ? ?Yeah, let?s see the rules.?
She took a book from a shelf and opened it.
?First something deceptive has to be agreed upon.?
?Like what?? Johnny asked.
?Like whose ??
?? Like who is what, Tom??
?Johnny, stop it!?
?Eat up. I have a great dessert for you.? She
smiled, jostling about the table.
?Alice, tell him the deception could be anything, anything he wants,? Tom said.
?Suppose someone doesn?t want to play??
Gisela got up, whispered in German and went to the door.
?The boat?s sinking.?
She paused, and then pulled it open.
?Did you bring your life preserver??
SMASH.
?I?m sorry,? Alice said, staring at a broken dish.
Tom rushed to the bathroom, and the door slammed.
