Resumo de A Christmas Carol

It is a cold Christmas Eve, in the commencement of one of the most famous books of Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol. The spirit of Christmas grips every nook and corner of the world, except maybe one particular corner-the one in Ebenezer Scrooge?s counting house, where he was sitting, counting his money. Bob Cratchit, his clerk sits shivering in another corner, as stingy old Scrooge refuses to spend extra money on purchasing coals. Fred, Scrooge?s nephew comes over to visit Scrooge to invite him to the annual Christmas party, but all Fred gets back is a cold ?Bah Humbug? for Fred?s warm ?merry Christmas?. Scrooge shows out his grouchy temper not only on Fred, but also on two men who drop in to ask Scrooge for some money for the charity.

When Scrooge decides to retire for the day and go to bed, he gets the shock of his life, as he gets visited by the ghost of his old dead partner, Jacob Marley, who is weighed down by chains gripping his hands and legs. Jacob later explains that he is chained and condemned to roam about the earth as a punishment for his greedy and selfish attitude which he carried along when he lived and warns Scrooge that he would be visited by three different ghosts on the next three consecutive nights.

The first ghost, the ghost of the Christmas past, a young ghoul with a shining head, arrives just as Scrooge wakes up. The ghost takes Scrooge into a journey of the past Christmases, where he recalls the scenes between Fezziwig and him, as well as the ones concerning Bella, the girl who left Scrooge, as his love for money was far greater than his love for her. Scrooge regrets his loss and sheds few drops of tears.

The next night, the second ghost, the ghost of the Christmas present, a huge giant with a green robe, visits scrooge. The ghost takes him to the Cratchit household, where he sees the huge Cratchit family all excited about a scanty feast. Scrooge?s heart warms to Bob Cratchit?s son, Tiny Tim, a crippled, but a brave little boy. At the end, Scrooge sees two famished children, Ignorance and Want.

The third ghost, the ghost of the Christmas yet to come, takes Scrooge to the future, where he finds himself in a graveyard, where he sees people, expressing their relief in the death of the man and some vagabonds, exchanging his belongings for some money. Scrooge, out of curiosity, begs the ghost to tell him the name of the man and is shocked when he sees his own name on the tombstone. Scrooge cries out the ghost that he would mend his self-centered and selfish attitude and that he seriously regrets them for his heart.

Suddenly, Scrooge finds himself back on his bed. Gushing with relief, Scrooge joins the Christmas spirit. He gifts a huge turkey to the Cratchit family and surprises everyone by attending Fred?s annual Christmas party. He looks after Tiny Tim like his own son and completely transforms himself from a stingy, mean old man to a man full of warmth, generosity and compassion.
