Spiritual Exercises And Ancient Philosophy
(Pierre Hadot)

Publicidade
The book by Pierre Hadot ?Exercices spirituels et philosophie antique,? renewed the studies of ancient philosophy at the end of the 20th century ? if one thinks, for example, of the influence he had upon the way in which Michel Foucault treats schools of ancient thought in lessons which he dedicated to the Collège de France one could read ?L?herméneutique du sujet? for example. In it the author proposes a simple and strong theory : the ancient manner of philosophizing seeks not before all else to suggest an abstract system of explanation of the world, but seeks rather to alter the way of life of those who commit themselves to philosophy through a variety of intellectual procedures which require a practical application and present themselves literally as spiritual exercises. Hadot proposes a series of chapters, or more so distinct articles, which deal with various trends of ancient philosophy; Socratism such as it is introduced by Plato, stoicism and in particular imperial stoicism, which proposes mental exercises to it?s adherents, or furthermore the neoplatonian school of Plotin from the 2nd century AD and shows on each occasion by what these schools, which are very different through their doctrinal teachings, seek however to enrich their followers, to make things in such a way that these people learn to live daily according to their philosophy. The book can be read in one go, as it lays out a great doctrinal unity, or in focusing on various individual chapters, the chapters can suffice alone as the central idea is very apparent in each. What?s more, the style of Pierre Hadot is that of great clarity and great teaching, and the subject is always very rigorous and well documented. The pleasure experienced in reading this work, which is accessible to all, is therefore great, and additionally it?s a book from which one doesn?t walk away merely informed, but transformed : Hadot manages to prove to his reader what might be the firm idea of living according to philosophy, and invites the reader to read with a fresh view ancient philosophy, with a view which wonders incessantly how he can digest what he reads in such a way that can transform his daily life. A book to be picked up by all; students of philosophy, but also those concerned with questioning their way of living and with knowing what the ancient philosophers can bring to this subject.
