An F.B.I. agent with amnesia has five days to catch a serial killer.
Riley Crane has lost the last three weeks of her life. She knows that she is a martial arts expert who was recruited by the F.B.I. after she left the army. She knows that she is a highly trained, extremely talented, awesomely competent member of an elite cadre known as the Special Crimes Unit. She knows that her specialty is occult rituals. So when she wakes up alone in her own bed, covered in blood without a mark on her; the first thing she does is call headquarters and talk to her boss.
Her last report was pitifully thin. Opal Island, small ocean front town, has become the focus of a fringe cult. Riley?s ex-army buddy asked her for help and she agreed to take an unofficial look at the situation. Several disturbing incidents involving missing and butchered animals have been reported, but authorities have discovered nothing to indicate satanic rituals. Then a jogger discovers a decapitated corpse and the local sheriff wants Riley to investigate.
The crime scene seems horribly familiar. Riley remembers coming to the woods shortly before she lost her memory. Bits and pieces involving people she?s met are slowly coming back to her; but there are still huge gaps in the recent past. Riley needs help.
As a rule, F.B.I. agents do not work without backup in these situations. Unfortunately, peculiar crime is on the rise and the other S.C.U. members are involved in other cases. Riley is an independent sort and no one else is available anyway; so, she makes a deal with her boss. If the situation is not resolved by Friday, she will relinquish the case and report to the psychiatrists in Quantico. She has less than a week to remember whatever it is she has forgotten, solve the murder and catch the killer.
