My Sister's Keeper
(Jodi Picoult)
In an era when talk revolves around designer babies and debates rage about the quality of life over sanctity of life, Jodi Picoult?s novel My Sister?s Keeper takes the discussions on to yet another level where one questions the developments in modern science with their implications in philosophy, morality and ethics. Thirteen year old Anna Fitzgerald, the protagonist of the novel takes the unusual step of hiring a lawyer to win medical emancipation from her parents who conceived her as a genetically perfect ?match? to provide stem cells and bone marrow for her leukaemia-stricken sister, Kate. On the surface it may be Anna?s kidney that is at stake finally , but behind the organ donor?s tragic dilemma, one hears a whole symphony of emotive voices of seven characters. Every one has a point of view in this book. Sara, the non-practising lawyer mother comes to her dying daughter?s defence even as the author seems to be asking, ?are you being a good mother?or a very bad one?? Brian the fire-fighter husband sides with Anna, while Jesse who learns early that he cannot be Kate?s hero as his marrow is rejected for donation, punishes himself in various ways just to be noticed. Campbell the relentless cynic lawyer provides the comic relief and sarcasm in psychologically charged situations.. Picoult plays the conflict through, giving intimate voices to everyone?s perspective in shifting narratives. Parents and siblings alike are tested severely in a question of whole life and whose death? Bonds are strained to tearing point when Anna says, ?Are you still a sister even when yours dies?? Picoult writes with a fine touch and explores a very complex web of human relationships. Questions still remain unanswered till the very end, with one more poser for the readers ? in the English language there are orphans and widows, but there is no word for the parent who loses a child. This is a book that people will be talking about at the water cooler.
