Respect Of The Roaches
(Arvind Xaxa)
In the ignorant and innocent days of my childhood I found myself in the beautiful tropical islands of the Philippines. My father worked for the Indian Foreign Department and this led to his postings all over the world and I then only eleven used to go with him. I had the notorious title of being my sister's tail and for some reason which i find hard to recall I always managed to follow my sister wherever she went. This time however I was after bigger game and having arrived in Manila for only a week we were invited to dinner by one of my father's colleagues. Being new to the city we were provided with an escort of whom I can hardly recall anything for when we left our hotel it had become quite dark. Now the Philippines is a developing country and so not to my surprise the route that we took was not well lit. All you could make out in the dim twilight were mere shadows of houses which managed to peek between the trees. We had decided to walk for our generous host's house was not far from our hotel. We had been walking for about fifteen minutes and were making our way under the avenue trees which swayed gently in the evening breeze. Some of the trees shed their dry weak leaves as the wind gently but firmly rubbed against them giving us a shower of foliage as if to greet us. It felt like a parade with confetti greeting us at almost every corner. It felt like a magical experience. As we neared our destination we noticed a solitary street lamp standing its ground against all odds, beckoning us forward as if a lighthouse to a stranded ship. And it was in its revealing light that our magical experience came to an abrupt end as it managed to lift the veil of deceit that the twilight had been playing on us. The confetti that was being showered (as if in a parade) revealed itself to being flying cockroaches. Millions of them, swarming in trees being tossed around like leaves in the wind. It was with this realization that my family gave a start and dashed towards our host's house. I (being as clueless as ever) managed to tail my sister to our safe haven. It was the first and the last time that we were honored by the resilient cockroach nation with a parade. And even though I enjoyed the parade I would like to them to not extend their hospitality to any other group of wanderers. And I am sure that you would agree with me, unless you are one of the people who enjoy the menu at a popular TV show, Fear Factor.
