Children Of The New Forest is set in the English Civil War years. Four young children raised in a Royalist household are shocked when Roundheads attack their home, burning it to the ground and killing their mother. The children are rescued by a gamekeeper who raises them as his own, and teaches them the was of the forest. The children grow over many years into resourceful intelligent hunter gatherers. Stripped of the luxuries of mansion life, they gradually become more and more working class. Occasionally their activity attracts attention from passing Parliamentarians, and the oldest boy develops a murderous passion both for revenge for his Mother?s death, and a desire to join the army and serve his troubled King. He is deeply distressed by news of the execution of Charles the 1st. He also develops a relationship with the daughter of a leading Parliamentarian, who grows to respect him when the boy saves the girl from an accidental fire. When the gruff but kindly gamekeeper dies, the children are truly alone, but now fully resourceful. With the rise of Charles 2cd, the oldest son does leave to join the army, leaving his younger brother in charge of his estate and the last main action section of the book is his military adventures and a period of exile when the King is driven to defeat. Finally, he returns home with the King for the Restoration and he is reunited with his family, who are now all grown up. They are rewarded for their services to the crown by having their estate awarded to them. An excellent very exciting story set over nearly two decades, a story with realistic scenes of the harsh life of the hunter and forest dweller.
