Oedipus The King
(Sofokles)

Publicidade
The tragedy Oedipus the King illustrates how hopeless is a man fighting with his fate. The more Oedipus tries to run away from his destiny, the faster he heads towards the fulfillment of an oracle's prediction. The man is a pawn in the hands of destiny and gods. Sophocles' tragedy makes one realise how magnificent and unerring the Delphic Oracle is. Both, Oedipus and Laius, do everything in their might to evade their fate. Nevertheless, all their actions, step by step, bring them closer and closer to its fulfillment. Oedipus attracted the gods' anger by the very act of his birth. The oracle forbade Laius to have children. He also offended gods with his arrogance (hybris), aroused during an investigation.
