Straight Talk
(Jane Green)
When faced with a book written by an author of an English background, an avid American reader would naturally have some literary apprehensions. It's not every day that a reader gets to experience text from a product of another culture's influence. "Straight Talk," by Jane Green is a wonderfully written page-turner exclusively targeted at single women worldwide. Jane Green's contemporary style of writing invites both single female readers to feel good about being a participant in the "dating game," and attached female readers to live vicariously in the world of liberation. The main character, Tasha, is a sexy and confident NYC inhabitant who has unapologetically been around the block more than once. She is a passion seeker and this quest for lust inevitabely puts Tasha in situations that are hilarious and easy for any woman who has dated around to relate to. Following a bit of a 'Sex and the City' motif, the novel is based around Tasha and her three friends, Andy, Emma, and Mel, each of them sorting though her own issues with the opposite sex. Andy is just as lust-driven as Tasha, yet Andy's perpetual man shopping never actually ends in anything more than a one-night stand like Tasha. Mel is a career woman who seems to have it all together, but is in a long-term relationship that is secretly destroying her self-image. Emma is a conservative woman who literally lives for her boyfriend; she hasn't quite mastered the art of living for her own benefit. Through her network of friends, Tasha reasons with her inner conflicts regarding men. She wants to feel loved and be part of a mutual companionship, yet she can't stop chasing the next thrill of a man who is blatantly bad news for her. Tasha is faced with the ultimate decision when her platonic friend Adam challenges her destructive behavior and shakes her world up by revealing a secret. As the female reader is left compulsively turning the pages, together with Tasha she is left to figure out: is passion really the most important ingredient to a satisfying relationship?
