A Rebellious Bride
(Brenda Hiatt)
When a hero goes on vacation, his best friend stands in for him and gains an admirer who decides to assist. Marcus Northrup is the youngest son of the Duke of Marland. He is rich, handsome, single, and determined to stay that way. He has every thing he could possibly want, except a sense of purpose. He has a real talent for lock picking; which he only uses in case of emergencies. Marcus is also very loyal and knows how to keep a secret. His best friend Luke St. Clair, Earl of Hardwyck, confided that he was the Saint of Seven Dials, Napoleonic era London?s version of Robin Hood. Luke is taking some much needed time off from adventuring; but a champion?s work is never done. Marcus eagerly agrees to fill the void. Quinn Peverill, daughter of a Baltimore shipping magnate, is new to London. When she gets lost trying to learn her way around, a handsome young man escorts her back to his place (just long enough to get change for a cab). Unfortunately, some busybody sees them together and informs her father and Duke Marland. Quinn is startled to learn that under the strict rules of London society, she will be ruined if Marcus doesn?t marry her. As a duke?s son, Marcus knows his duty and arranges for a special license. Quinn doesn?t see what all the fuss is about, and tries to back out of the engagement. She tries to arrange an ocean trip to Baltimore without her father?s knowledge. While slipping through the poorer side of town, she gets kidnapped along with some girls even younger than she is. Before Quinn?s captors can smuggle her and the other victims out of London, the Saint rescues them. Although Quinn recognizes Marcus, she doesn?t tell him she knows he?s the Saint. (He has the same build, same eyes, same hair color, same voice; it?s just a mask for pity?s sake!) Quinn decides that marriage to a Duke?s son who moonlights as a social crusader might be fun.Besides, even a hero needs help once in a while; especially when he?s new to the job.
