Dissolution
(C.J. Sansom)
A whodunit set in 1537 in a monastery where the hero of the novel is Martin Shardlake a lawyer and reformist and incidentally also a hunchback sounds like heavy reading. This was actually not the case at all from the very first page I found the book an enjoyable easy read. Shardlake is an extremely likeable type of fellow who I found myself identifying with even though we had nothing remotely in common. If you like books which entertain with a good story while also educating one with the detailed historical context in which they are set you will love this book. Set at the corrupt time when the Government were breaking up all the monasteries. With the monks of Scarnsea, servants and smugglers there were sufficient suspects and twists to keep one guessing who the murderer was, though I did guess about 30 pages before I should of. A definite good read, if you enjoyed Cadfael and The Naming of The Rose you?ll love this book.
