The Alchemist
(Paulo Coelho)

Paulo Coelho's THE ALCHEMIST dives head-long into the current of that eternal existential angst and comes out with a rare poetic perfect 10! At a time when young dreamers seem to be engulfed in a 'professional Vs entrepreneur' pyschic battle, the Brazilian's treatise on "fullfilling one's destiny" acquires a time-less pertinence which shall make it a dreamer's Bible.Through the 'soul-searching' journey of Santiago,Coelho not only rekindles the cold 'dream-fires' of his readers but goes several steps ahead of his predecessors by convincingly showing the way which is infinitely more difficult.
Coelho weaves a romantic yet powerful story-play while answering each and every question a Santiago might come up with.Going back to that forgotten "fabulous-fable" mould of story-telling Coelho vividly contrasts his fictional world with the modern world only to highlight the universality of the question of a man's quest in life.Coelho, true to what he preaches in THE ALCHEMIST ,seems to connect with the Soul of the World through his innate understanding of Nature reminding his readers a thing or two about the Language of the World,a language of omens, smiles and humanity. The readers seem to travel with the book to the grasslands of Andalusia, the ports of Tangiers and to the desert-life of Al-Fayoum which is an albeit forgotten world for the concrete-jungle urban reader.
Santiago's disgust for his sheep for being concerned with only 'food and water' raises an alarm in the minds of all the readers who are stuck in obscure lives for material neccessities as banal as money, food or water. Stop being a sheep...This seems to be the first of many helpful lessons which Coelho gives us.Santiago's reluctance to leave his shepherd-ways or the crystal-merchant's denial of his dream of visiting Mecca find strong reflection in our world where most of us are tethered to convinience or sufficience, inspite of suffering the pangs of not answering our calling.
Indeed, there shan't be any Coelho directed King of Salem to convince us nor an alchemist to show us the way but Coelho encourages every dreamer intent on realizing his dreams by his famous lines-"When you want something, the whole universe conspires to give it to you."Coelho's persuasive arguments prove that life's journey holds greater significance than the dream-destination itself. In the Epilogue, an incredulous Santiago marvels at the Lord's divine plan of showing him the Pyaramids to which God replies,"They are beautiful, aren't they?" Thus, Coelho re-iterates that we must open our eyes and minds to the beauty around us for that is what makes the journey worthwhile or life memorable.
Coelho sums up in the words of his Alchemist,"Your dream is where your heart is", reminding us of that basic tenet of both success and happiness. For every man stuck in the wrong profession, even for a house-wife searching for happiness or for that matter a young man asking questions of his future,Coelho serves up the ultimate solution of following one's heart irrespective of the importance, credulousness or worldly-perception of its desires. The camel-driver's initial obsession of knowing the path laid out for him, mirrors the common youth following the stacatto path in life. But his subsequent surrender to living life for the moment brings upon him a peace the modern man seldom gains.
Coelho warns through the Santiago's year of polishing crystal that the path to our destiny may often seem lost or too arduous to pursue.Yet we must bide through this time with patience and willingness to excel in it for it is much like the fire through which metals have to go through to turn into gold.Santiago's lessons from his shepherding stand him in better stead than the Englishman who has spent years learning complex alchemy. Thus,Coelho offers hope for the Santiagos amongst us who are polishing crystal.
THE ALCHEMIST underlines the inevitability of Fate but Coelho departs from the norm in highlighting how the fman on a mission. The oft repeated use of the arabic word maktub hightens Coelho's play on omens, fate and destiny. The adherence to ethics, singular trust in the protection of the Lord and the knowledge that even death in pursuing a goal is more honourable than living a meek obscure life form the basis of Coelho's magic to success.Through the alchemist's words,"You already know what you need to know", to a circumspect Santiago, Coelho re-establishes self-belief as the key ingredient to success.
Coelho recognizes the trepidation of a young man in choosing between love and dream.Fatima, a true desert-woman, bids her love to go forward in his quest, thus, portraying the rightful stance of a companion in life's journey. The struggle to balance life and love, the prospect of leaving behind a loved one and the apparent satisfaction of having gained one's love are all subtlely dealt with by Coelho. As with Santiago, love becomes the source of strength which takes us forward for it was Santiago's very love for Fatima which enabled him to turn into the wind.
Alchemy in THE ALCHEMSIT deals with turning our 'baser mettle's' into gold through the fires of pursuing one's dream.Paulo Coelho is indeed the real Alchemist who slams cowards who forget to pursue their reason of being in the universe by believing in the world's greatest lie-"we lose control of what's happening to us and our lives become contolled by fate".Seize control of your life, its never too late.
