The India Of My Dreams
(Self)
A dream is a sub-conscious psychic vision of the 'Ideal';coloured by personal affections and framed by the human yearning to reach his own 'Utopia'.Thus, every human is a dreamer. For the dollar-driven young dreamer, reaching the top of the world is his singular dream whereas the dreamy-eyed romantic dreams of gaining his divine love. But for all the myriad personal fantasies and dreams, the only common dream born out of the heart of patriotic sensibility is that of the country of our dreams. And when the country at the heart of such a dream is as great as India, the dream is rather vivid, colourful and I daresay complex. The picture of the India of my dreams isn't a whole lot different from the real picture of our great nation.Neither do I intend on beautifying the painting by 'imported' colours nor re-structuring it with fantabulous insertions. The India of my dreams is but an amalgamation of its innate 'Indianess' manifested in its past glory and promised in its gleaming future. The India of my dreams is also the India of your dreams. The India of my dreams wouldnt be suffering from an identity-crisis nor plagued by the mindless 'east-vs-west' conflict. It would not be pseudo-secular but religiously tolerant in the true spirit of the term.It would not be wrecked by a petty polity divided into countless selfish parties much like the venomous 'Hydra-heads'.The hiatus between the rich and the poor wouldnt be fuelled by government fiscal policy nor screened by patronizing schemes which are nothing but political gimmicks to garner votes. The forgotten forests and wild-life of our formerly green India wouldnt be left to perish by lottery.Meritocrasy would render all children of our country equal not consign them to obscure lives as penalty for our archaic caste-system.It wouldnt be vandalized by the 'police-lathi'nor marauding 'Bajrang-dals'. At a time when Indian soceity is undergoing a sea-change with growing approval of Western liberal life, condemning dogmas of our past;the Indian is engulfed by angst as to his identity. The fissure across soceity makes the footsteps of progress unsure and shaky. The India of my dreams would sensibly imbibe the best of both the worlds;profiting from western rationale based on education, equality and liberty but not shunning our traditional Indian values which have made India the truly great nation it is today.Ideally a young girl should not be harassed for singing to Madonna's tunes nor a young man insulted for his Vedic practises.Cultural tolerance and acceptance of the gulf between generations is central to social harmony. In the India of my dreams,a Muslim wont be judged by his name but by his actions.Indians cutting across strata and religilion have forgotten religious tolerance but shamelessly accept to having to live together as "there's no other way out!"The India of my dreams would be secular much like in our past where Godhras or Gujarats never showed Indians to be brutish beasts.I dream fanatics stop hankering after Ram Mandirs in Ayodhya but understand the lesson of brotherhood imparted by Lord Rama. I dream of a political system in India which is not fractured by small regional or communal parties which in the name of upliftment of their votebanks mar national harmony.I dream our brothers in Jammu-Kashmir and in the North-East feel they are as much protected and promoted as their brothers in Delhi.I dream of a relationship of respect and trust with Pakistan where Indians remember that they too were our countrymen.I dream of seeing India on its rightful pedestal in the world;permanent membership of the UNSC included.I dream the youth of our nation actively participate in our polity and that political big-wigs give them a chance.I dream the Indian 'Neta' is not a corrupt uneducated criminal but a young selfless technocrat. I dream of an Indian economy which distributes the benifits of our progress not restrict it to the 'bulls-n-bears'.Infrasountry has to be made world-class to sustain the IT Revolution.Governments must legislate policies to aid Industry not submit to the unjust pressures of allies.I dream the young IT worker isnt made a cyber-coolie,I dream the helpless Labourer is protected by Labour Laws,I dream the visionary entrepreneur isn't shackled by 'red-tapeism'. I dream of civil liberties in our nation.I dream that factory workers are never brutalized in Noida nor peaceful protests be lathi-charged.I dream our Judiciary doesnt jail the innocent nor deny justice till decades.I dream our Beaureacracy functions without exploiting us or stooping tothe demands of politicians.I dream policemen recollect what POLICE stands for.I dream of equality of the girl-child.I dream Indian men are respectful and chivalrous to women.I dream our women can walk atleast in the day(forget the night) with security. I dream of an educatonal system where every young dreamer is given his chance not chained by lack of seats or casteist reservations.I dream that the lakhs of unemployed Indians are integrated into the corporate world.I dream the young schoolboy has a park to play and the talented dancers allowed to catch up to their dreams.I dream of Indian kids living life not jailed in the rat-race for academic success. To capture the essence of the India of my dreams I would like to tweak a few lines from John Lennon's 'Imagine': "U may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday u'll join us And India will be No.1".
