(Miller, Aurthur)

Publicidade
Arthur Miller's ingenious writing of The Crucible is one of the best stories portraying the Salem Witchcraft Trial and the havoc it raised in the small town of Salem, Massachutess. Set in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. It begins in the house of Reverend Samuel Parris. Beside the bed of his daughter, Betty, who appears lifeless? His niece Abigail Williams is questioned about the events of the previous night. Parris caught his daughter in the woods, with Abigail, Mary Warren, Ruth Putnam, Mercy Lewis, and Tituba, his slave, dancing and chanting. At the sight of her father?s presence Betty fainted and now appears lifeless. Abigail refused to disclose the happenings of the night before. Town members including John Proctor and Reverend Hale arrive at the home of the Reverend in a stir over the situation. The town?s people think the Devil might be at play and want him gone. In order to do this the girls will have to repent their sins but the Reverend is afraid his daughter will be accused of being a witch and he will be cast out of town. Reverend John Hale, a known authority on witchcraft talks with Betty and gets her to confess that they were conjuring spirits in the woods that night and gave him the names of others to be believed to be witches. John Proctor?s wife, Elizabeth pleads with him to turn Abigail in to the courts saying she is a fraud but he is reluctant to become involved in the so-called with-hunt. When Proctor?s servant Mary Warren returns from the court she expresses to them that Elizabeth has been accused of being a witch. John agrees to speak to Abigail but she only wants John to profess is love for her which he will not. Ezekiel Cheever and Marshal Herrick arrive at the Proctor house to arrest Elizabeth, because she supposedly has poppets (dolls used in witchcraft) in her house. All of the girls brought before the court swear they are telling the truth. Proctor admits that he is a lecher but when questioned, Elizabeth denies her husband being a lecher. The girls all accuse Mary of being evil but she can not stand it anymore so she accuses John Proctor of being the devil. Proctor confessed to the court but later withdraws it because he refuses to let the paper that he signed hung up on the church door. This story is one based on accusations, lies, debauchery, adultery, and secrets. Along the way several characters are tried based on lies that are expressed by people to hide their own sins. Innocent people are jailed and hung. Great injustices are done and the people of Salem suffer.
