Resumo de Genesis - The Bible

The book of Genesis describes the Creation of the Earth and God's first people:

The Creation
God created light, then the heavens and the earth, the moon and the stars, all the creatures of the earth and finally Man. God created all this in 6 days, on the 7th day God rested.

Adam and Eve
God put Adam in the garden of Eden and told him that he may eat of every tree but the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God made Eve out of a rib of Adam. Eve was tempted by the serpent to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge. She gave the fruit to Adam and he also ate it. After they ate the fruit they knew they were naked and covered themselves. God punished Adam and Eve by banishing them from Eden. God declares that Eve will bear children in pain and Adam will rule over Eve and that Adam and Eve will return to the dust they came from.

Cain and Abel
Eve has two sons, Abel the shepherd and Cain the farmer. Abel made an offering of his sheep to God while Cain offered the fruit of his harvest. God was pleased with Abel's offering but not with Cain's offering. Cain was jealous and killed Abel. God punished Cain by banishing him to the land of Nod. Eve has another son, Seth.

Noah's Ark
God was unhappy with the wickedness of Man and wished to destroy the Earth. He called Noah to build an ark and take 2 of every creature, male and female, to the ark with him. God then caused a heavy rain that lasted 40 days and 40 nights. At the end of the flood, God put a rainbow in the sky as a covenant, a promise that God shall not destroy the earth.

Tower of Babel
Noah's descendents build a city and tower. They become proud and want to build a tower that can reach the heavens. God confounded their languages and scattered the people abroad.

Abraham and Isaac
God blessed Abraham and made a covenant with him that he shall be rich and his descendents plentiful. God tested Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac as a burnt offering. Abraham did not hesitate to put the knife to Isaac's neck. God stopped Abraham from killing Isaac and provided a ram for the sacrifice.

Jacob and Esau
Isaac had two sons Esau and Jacob. As Esau is the oldest son, Isaac wanted to give him a blessing. He asked Esau to hunt and cook venison for him to eat and after eating would bless Esau. Jacob cunningly pretended to be Esau and gave the venison to Isaac, who was old and blind. Jacob received the blessing reserved for Esau.

Joseph
Jacob, having received the blessing passed down from Abraham to Isaac, has many descendents, including 12 sons. Joseph is Jacob's favourite and Joseph's brothers were jealous. They sold Joseph to some travelling merchants who brought him to Egypt, and returned to tell Jacob that Joseph had been killed. In Egypt, Joseph was appointed overseer to Potiphar, an officer of the Pharoah. Potiphar's wife falsely accused Joseph of attempting to rape her and Joseph was sent to prison.
In prison, Joseph interprets the dreams of his fellow prisoners correctly. His ability to interpret dreams becomes known to the Pharoah and he is called to interpret the Pharoah's dreams. The Pharoah dreams of 7 fat cows followed by 7 lean cows, and 7 fat corn followed by 7 lean ears of corn. Joseph interprets that the dream means that 7 good years of plenty would be followed by 7 years of famine. Pharoah puts Joseph in charge of saving food for the famine.
Joseph saves well and during the 7 years of famine, Egypt enjoys relative wealth, with plenty of food stocked up. People from other countries come to Egypt to buy food, including Joseph's brothers. Joseph first pretends not to know them, but finally reveals himself and forgives his brothers.
