Rogue's Honor
(Brenda Hiatt)
Robin Hood meets Cinderella in this light hearted romantic adventure concerning an orphan with a villainous uncle and a strong willed heiress with a scheming stepmother. Lady Pearl Moreston, daughter of the Duke of Oakshire, is a beautiful, brainy blonde who knows what she wants and how to get it. She?s got plans which don?t include a husband. Pearl inherits the Fairbourne estate if she remains unmarried until her 21st birthday. An independent woman with a social conscience, Pearl intends to make some changes when she takes control of her own estate. But first, she intends to learn more about the poor and down trodden by personally observing their suffering. Unfortunately for Pearl, her stepmother has plans as well. Obelia, second Duchess of Oakshire, is a woman who knows what she wants and how to get it. She wants her stepdaughter to get married before her 21st birthday. So, Obelia conspires with one of Pearl?s suitors to ruin her stepdaughter?s reputation. Pearl overhears their plan. Forewarned, she manages to avoid being compromised. Later at a party, Pearl escapes from another over amorous suitor with the help of a charming housebreaker named Luke St Clair. Curious about her handsome rescuer, Pearl vows to learn more about him. Luke St. Clair is a man of many talents. He put himself through school (under the name of Lucio De Santo) by picking pockets and fencing stolen property. The school authorities thought Luke's tuition was paid by his uncle, a minor nobleman from Italy. Luke plays the part of a footman or an aristocrat with equal ease. He is the notorious Saint of Seven Dials; a thief who robs from the rich and gives to the poor. For as long as he can remember, Luke has despised the aristocracy; but he senses that Pearl is different and trusts her with the few facts he knows about his background. Luke thinks his mother, Dorothea Sinclair, was the mistress of some nobleman who cast her off when she became pregnant. But Dorothea always swore that she and his father were married and deeply in love. He never knew his father; but his mother died while working as a nurse in the country when he was barely 12. At first, he stole to survive. Then, he began rescuing friends who weren?t quite as smart or lucky. The next thing he knew, he had a reputation for helping those in need by taking from those with plenty to spare. Pearl has nothing but respect and admiration for the Saint who helps the helpless, the orphan who did what he had to do to survive and the charmer who can play any role he chooses. Luke has been rescuing others so long; he isn?t used to asking for help. That?s all right with Pearl. She isn?t used to asking anyone for anything. Without Luke?s knowledge, she hires a private investigator to look into his background. Dorothea Sinclair, the only child of the Earl of Sinclair, married John Knox, oldest son of the Earl of Hardwyck almost 30 years ago. Wallis Knox, current Earl of Hardwyck, gained the title after his brother died in a mysterious accident. Dorothea suspected her brother in law killed her husband; but she had no proof. When her home caught fire, she fled for her life with her infant son and let the world think they were dead. Luke?s old nurse knows the truth, but she?s been in hiding since her mistress died. It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a heroine who takes control of her own life! A can?t miss read for anyone who ever wondered why Lois Lane didn?t realize that Superman and Clark Kent were one and the same.
