The Grapes Of Wrath

The Grapes of Wrath- (Pulitzer winning novel), written by John Steinbeck in the late 30's. The story takes place during the depression years and it tells the story of a the Joads, a family of farmers who work on a land that belongs to a land owner, which recives profits from letting a family use his land. A fate induced to them when drought and a series of massive dust storms swept through their land rendering it useless. The Joad family were forced to move west and suffer different kinds of hardships as 'migrants'. The plot begins from Tom Joads point of view after his release from prison for involuntary manslaughter after a prison term of four years he spent inside, only to find his home empty and deserted. Upon arrival to his uncle's farm he discovers his family loading a truch with all they own, and learns he had lost his own farm due to overdue loans and a series of dust storms which made the land useless. The Joads headed west in a journey which cost them the little possession they had left, hopefull for a chance to start over in the west Tom Joad left Oklahoma with his family and with Jim Casy and broke his parole- becoming a criminal in the state of Oklahoma by doing so, a risk he had little choice but to take. The Joads encounter families some which are heading back from the west, which tell them that life in the west are too hard. The Joads who have no relatives left and children grown and gone, they decide to proceed in their journey. With unimaginable hardships which lay ahead of them, the Joads head West- to California.
