"o Pioneers!" And "death Comes For The Archbishop"
(Willa Cather)

Publicidade
You have to discover the author Willa Cather. Her books are gentle and discerning. ?O Pioneers!? was the first of her books that I read and I found it refreshing, like a cool summer breeze.

The story was not at all what I expected. I think I was expecting something more like ?Little House on the Prairie?, but this is mature writing with characters that are so well fleshed-out they don?t have to try to make an impression on you.

Alexandra seemed to me to embody all the values we associate with the pioneers ? steadfastness, commitment, determination. And she was also loving and gentle with those around her. Even those society considered crazy were welcomed by her and given value.

Amongst the Willa Cather books I have read thus far I think ?Death Comes for the Archbishop? is my favorite. It is a riveting story that I could hardly put down. Not so much because of any action or adventure in the story (though there are adventures) but because of how real the characters became. I felt as if I was right there with the archbishop and his priest, so real they were. And I hated for the story to come to an end because I could sense the loss of a good friend long before the last page.

I am humbled when I read her books. There is so much in her description of her characters and how they relate to each other and I feel as if I am in the presence of something great when I am reading one of Willa Cather?s books.
