The Wandering Whore
(Iny Lorentz)
'The Wandering Whore' written by Iny Lorentz takes the Reader into the Middle Ages. This historical novel offers sometimes a very cruel version of the events. It tells the story of a beautiful middle-class woman Maria, who is raped of her honour through an intrigue by her own fiancé, an unscrupulous advocate. Lord Ruppert courtes her, but only to get all the possessions of her and her father. He doesn't shrink away from raping Maria again and afterwards he calls her a strumpet. Maria has been succesfully convicted and is banned from the city, but she seeks bloody revenge. To survive, she has to sell her body and joins a group of wandering whores. The adventurous travels of these women are described insistently. Their voyages take them from Konstanz to Baden. From there she comes back to her home city and takes revenge with the help of her new-won girlfriends and influential friends. Her honour is regained and a new life lies in front of her, but the wounds of the past will never heal. This book shows how cruel the Middle Age in Germany around 1410 AD could be. Especially women are worth nothing. But it shows, even there, people have fight for their life and their personal luck. Against the expectations it avoids to be wishy-washy and pornographically.
