(Aeschylus)

Publicidade
Prometheus is Climene and Japet (a Titan)?s son. As he is the son of a Titan, Prometheus is immortal, and, in the war which opposes the Titans to the gods, first of all, Prometheus chooses to support his family and his father. Proud of his intelligence, he decides to use it in helping the Titans to win the war. But the Titans prefer a brutal and physical conflict. Disappointed that he has not been commended for his strategy, Prometheus decides to help the gods to fight the Titans, and shut them in the Tartar. However, hating the humans, Zeus wishes to kill them, and replace them by other creatures. To kill the humans, he decides to withdraw the fire from Earth, and asks them to sacrifice animals, so that the humans cannot eat anything. But Prometheus decides to help the humans, and he uses trickery to achieve his ends. He gives the best share of the sacrifice to the humans, and the worst share to the gods. When Zeus learns this trick, he definitively takes the fire away from Earth. However, always anxious to help the humans to survive, Prometheus steals the fire from the gods and gives it back to the humans, also bringing them the discovery of sciences and arts. Absolutely manic, Zeus wants to punish Prometheus. He asks Hephaestus to arrest him and to bind him to a mountain, far away from the civilization. Then, since Prometheus is immortal, Zeus decides to send an eagle to devour Prometheus?s liver each day, and this, for eternity. Approximately thirty millennia later, Heracles releases Prometheus who can predict to Zeus that he will be dethroned by one of his future son. Zeus decides to forgive Prometheus provided that he says to him who will be the son who will dethrone him. Prometheus reveals to him that the son who will dethrone him is the one he would have with the beautiful goddess Thetas. Zeus decides that he will not court the goddess any more, and forgives Prometheus.
