The Charterhouse Of Parma
(Stendhal)

The classic novels of great authors continue to bring us a reservoir of wisdom still relevant today and they also allow us to learn about epochs that we have never lived. The travels one undertakes while turning the vivid and wise pages are certainly instructive and fascinating. The Charterhouse of Parma can easily be considered one of the masterpieces of classic literature and it has many things in common with another great work by the same author: The Red and The Black. This is a novel that is frequently considered scholastic: the young protagonist, born of noble, rich and powerful lineage, brings to a close his adolescent through numerous life experiences. The long-lasting influence of his aunt, a strong-willed and impetuous woman of enchanting beauty, will make a strong impression in his life. The main character is full of enthusiasm and inexperience. He pursued the myth of Napoleon, by then in decline. He yearns for his heart to beat for love. He kills for self-defence and will come to understand himself during his time in prison in a tower so high seemingly ominous even to the heavens. Isolation becomes an essential condition to self-questioning, to finally understand the love he never felt that is at once source of profound happiness and unprecedented torment. The Parma courts, no different from the rest, is the mirror of absolute power elegantly exposed to ridicule. The courtesans are victims of the author?s sly irony revealing their grotesque cruelty and the ridiculous whims of their ambition. The main characters in this story full of passion and intrigue seem to pursue goals that gratify only brief eluding moments of joy while boredom snaps hastily at their heels. The rapid succession of events is breathtaking until the curtain falls.
