Caswell?s Effective Masterpiece

Five telepathic Babies, a group of talented adolescents and two ruthless scientists are all part of the thriller A Cage Of Butterflies by Brian Caswell. The novel itself is a complicated yet understandable story of the controversial theme ?science experimenting with autistic children?. The format and structure of this enthralling novel is unique and the technique of the actual writing is also distinctive to Caswell.

The most distinctive formatting technique in the novel is the way Caswell alternates between first and third person. Throughout this novel all the odd chapters have been first person using different characters from the story and the even chapters are all third person with the narrator telling the story. This is an interesting and effective way to tell a story without giving away the plot at once. This also builds suspense and is a clever way of interpreting a story. This method includes all views from the main characters making sure that there are no bias opinions.

Throughout A Cage Of Butterflies there is consistent reference to dates and time. This is a practical and thoughtful method providing the reader with the timeframe of events. There are many events in the novel that needs a reference to a date or time, for example when the complex was on fire there is always occasional reference back of the time to show what is happening after a certain period of time. Another example is in the epilogue where the year was 1996; this shows how many years have past since the Babies were still in the complex, in this case 6 years.

Caswell?s use of imagery is very effective throughout his novel. One example of imagery in A Cage Of Butterflies is in chapter 12 when the Noise is described following the theme of the ocean. Another technique of imagery is to describe with reality. Caswell can depict with words that are so well chosen to the extent that the reader can picture and feel the emotions and fear of a character in the novel. This is proven in chapter 22 when Ricardo put MacIntyre into his worst fear. The power of the words gave the reader the impact of how MacIntyre terrified felt. This is the talent of Caswell.

The way Caswell approached and delivered his subject or message was impressive. The main argument in the novel is against ?scientific research with autistic children? which is presented clearly in the story. The novel mainly included the thoughts of teenagers which is not difficult to understand. The moderate speed of which the story is presented is effective as each character?s thoughts and feelings are mentioned. This gives the reader a comfortable pace to read that will keep their interest.

It would appear that A Cage Of Butterflies is a standard novel with ordinary content but this is not the case if we understand carefully into this dense novel. With a creative format of alternating views and unique writing style of imagery this is definitely an extraordinary novel.
