(Oscar Wild)
Witty, intelligent, cynical. Genius, vehement, eccentric man - Oscar Wild. His life has been condensed and liquefied into magic potion of literature. Flavour should appeal even to the fastidious - drink slowly, savouring the bitterness of irony, the sweetness of superb humour and aroma of XIX-century English aristocracy. I recommend edition in English, because you can slowly drink the oozing words, directly from mr. Wild's mouth, not from the translator's. Collection comprises a set of the most popular stories (for example The Happy Prince, dramatic works (for example The Ballad of Reading Goal). The idiosyncratic style of Wild's writings is a combination of sensible plot, the characteristics of social classes, extaordinary concept and usually moralizing punchline. Everything woud seem stodgy if not the genius of the writer which appears in creating simple and natural work. It is a useful ability which smooths the complex structures of works. I strongly reccommend The Importance of Being Earnest - a comedy based on skillfully constructed intrigue. Algernon Moncerief - handsome, cynical aristocrat taking pleasure in practising Bunburyist - life of dandy and eternal libertine sets a trap on a young, pretty and primarily innocent Cecil, who is a girl under John Worthing's care - disciplined friend of Algeron additionally enamoured in his cousin Gwendolen. Both ladies dream of marrying the man whose name is Earnest (they are quite materialists - earn in Earnest mens making money). It happens so that after the numerous accidental events, Algernon as well as John introduce themselves as Earnest. Biggish portion of humour and at first sight complicated events incite to move into magic London and take part in actings between men and women full of allusions and insinuations.
