On Condition
(Eustachy Rylski)
This is a story about two men, polish soldiers who at the side of the Napoleon Army approach Moskow. It's September 1812. Captain Andrzej Rangult is a legend of the polish cavalry, the symbol of a slavic warrior. Handsome, restless, angry, unpredictable and manly. Lieutenant Semen Hoszowski is his opposite and how the author describes it: "on one side he's razor-sharp, on the other side he's dull as peasant's plowshare and in the middle he's dark like the night". He's a messenger who brought an application about Rangult's recognition of the Honorable Legion, the highest distinction. Fate brings together both of these soldiers through an insignificant discution that ends with a gun duel. Tired and sick, to the great suprisement of his company, Rangult misses. The Lieutenant which says about himself that he never misses, was interrupted in shooting by the arrival of army corps of the general who doesn't tolerate duels between his subordinates. Playing with fire, risen by honor the captain of the szwolozers, later demands in secret from the command, from Hoszowski to finish his obligations. He refuses, however he suggesting a game of dice, the stakes would be one shot in case Rangult wins and if the Lieutenant wins he gets all of the captain's and his company's valuables. The Lieutenant wins. Intigue ties with another intrigue. To the game for life between Hoszowski and Rangult comes the general, the captains pretorians, three hot-blooded szwolozers and even diabolic forces or Rangult's sister whose likeness draws Hoszowski's attention while Rangult's confused. We're dealing with murders, an escpe, a long and pitiless journey twords Lithuania and mosy importantly a history of a certain contrast between the captain and the lieutenant, which is a mix of friendship with hatred, an unpaid debt with new debts made... This book is intruiging and interesting, written with a language full of metafors, which on one side makes the reader think and on the other amazes with meanings. Although it's not a simple language but you read it wih great joy... Rylski clearly refers to Henryk Sienkiewicz in the plot part as well as the language. An A+ novel...
