Pride And Prejudice

The timeless excitement surrounding Jane Austin?s novel
Pride and Prejudice has little to do with costume, setting
or conclusion -that is all by-product- it has to do with
sexual tension.
The story is told of five daughters, with a busybody
mother Mrs. Bennet, ever eager to find a right attachment
for her daughters so that they will not collectively be
paupers if and when the father dies. Mr. Bennet is laidback;
cool, most likely in an arranged marriage himself where he's
learned to play aloof to his wife?s meddling.
The five daughters have varied characters. There are the
two younger foolish daughters, flirtatious, careless, one of
whom invites ridiculous scandal Mrs. Bennet is afraid will
tarnish all of their names and hamper the other sister?s
chance for a match. There is the intelligent plain one,
always ready with a moral word to the other girls? behavior.
Then there is the eldest, Jane; beautiful, shy, in-love
from an early stage. Her interest in Mr. Bingley who has
come to Summer in Herefordshire, opens the door for our dear
Elisabeth, our heroine, to meet and then participate in
intelligent banter with our man of the story, Mr. Darcy.
Elisabeth is sensible, witty, somewhat of a feminist, if
indeed they could be called such in 1813. Uneager to be
matched just for financial gain or status in society, she is
ready with her tongue and her wit to ward off any such
displeasing attractions. A first meeting with Mr. Darcy
occurs at a social dance where she overhears him talking
idly of others giving her reason to paint the picture of a
proud, self-absorbed, arrogant man.
Their chance meetings as well as rumors flying around
society, lead to misunderstandings and misjudgments. One of
the classic battle-of-the-sexes ensues with hurtful
comments, witty comebacks, expressions of love, expressions
of hate, diversions and yet more misunderstandings. There is
an excitement surrounding this under-stated romance, this
intelligent banter and play with words. As a woman, you wish
for Elisabeth?s strength of character, wit and independence
and as a man you wish for Mr. Darcy?s reserved stylishness,
his aloofness of character and ability to speak his mind at
any given time.
Pride and Prejudice is a story of love and romance in
the best possible sense. A verbal grappling with feelings of
displeasure, excitement, tension and love. Love is an end
result. Sexual tension is the journey. How we so much like
the journey.
