Understanding self-confidence

Self-confidence is undermined by both shyness and embarrassment. Low self-confidence undermines self-esteem. Many people are held back by fears, yet more than half of the fears that drag us down are without foundation. Many fears come from events that have passed; you can?t do anything about them. Some fears are so petty they are not worthy of consideration. If the remaining fears are real, then set up strategies for dealing with them, rather than let them rule your life.

Here are some suggestions for what you can do to be more confident :

1. Act as if you already possessed self-confidence.
2. Assume the posture of a confident person ? walk tall!
3. Become a specialist.
4. Don?t get stuck in the pit of yesterday?s failures.
5. Engage in social activities.
6. If you fear someone, visualise being pleasant and getting along well.
7. Know your weaknesses and your strengths.
8. Praise yourself to yourself.
9. Put yourself in the other person?s shoes.
10. Seek out constructive, positive-thinking people.
11. Take a course in public speaking, or join a debating group, or take up a hobby that involves other people. You will find that the common interest helps to build your self-confidence.
