Mariette In Ecstasy
(Ron Hansen)
The story takes place in The Order of Sisters of Crucifixion at the beginning of the twentieth century. The nuns and the novices can't wait for the arrival of Mariette Baptiste. Warm reception of the new postulant and kindness of the nuns confirm the christian spirit of the order. Thanks to the support of the prioress Celine, clergyman Mariott and friendly Sisters Mariette feels like home. Putting herself to the ascetic order rules and accepting all the habits Mariette quickly gaines liking from the fellow Sisters. Obediently fullfiling her duties she discovers the everyday life of the order of which she becomes an integral part. Mariette's flawless faith, emanating the incredible spiritual power, becomes an inspiration for the young hearts of the austere order. However, the arrival of Mariette brings some significant changes into the order. There appear a special kind of spirituality which had been unknown so far. It complicates the clear vision of religiousness and breaks the long-lasting order of the Sisters' life. Eventually, it turns against innocent Mariette. The Sisters are not able to guess what is true and what is false. They can't tell the real revelation from mystification. This is very moving story. It reveals multidimensionality of human personality. It asks questions if it is easy to find the faith, especially for those who regard faith as the highest value. This book shows that in the world ruled by sincerity and openness we may feel really embarassed. It is hard to find God when we are really close to Him. This book - focused on the world, faith and people - is really unusual. Ron Hansen, Mariette in Ecstasy, Pozna?, 2000
