The Hayes family enjoys a normal, quiet suburban life in Ireland. But when Andrea and Martin discover a note beside their missing daughter?s bed, their whole life is turned upside down.
Set in the post IRA U.K., the story takes place in two locations, namely London and the unidentified suburb in Ireland, and is narrated in the third person. As the book?s focus is split between two hostages there is no single protagonist. However the two hostages themselves can be considered the protagonists as they have to endure the most suffering to escape with their lives, as well as ensuring their captors don?t get what they want.
Andrea Hayes is one of the hostages, who is wanted for her skills as a former bomb-maker for the IRA. Her captors have forces her to make a bomb capable of blowing up an entire building, under the threat of killing her daughter, Katie. Meanwhile, her husband, Martin is trying to cope with the situation.
When Martin realizes that his own life is in danger, he flees the country to London where he discovers a note left to him by Andrea, instructing him to call Liam Denham, a former member of the special branch.
Once Martin does this, he is pulled into the situation himself, as he learns that his wife used to be a member of the Special Branch, working undercover as an IRA bomb-maker. Working with Martin and the rest of the Special Branch, Liam Devin and his team work together to try and locate the bomb, Andrea, and Katie.
The book?s pace is slow and suspenseful, but once the major plot details are revealed, the book?s outcome is easy to guess, and the rest of the story becomes monotonous. However, one of the most unique things about this book is the clarity that each character?s emotions and personas are described with. This helps to give a sense of realism to the book
Overall, the book?s storyline is very interesting, but the way that the events play out may be predictable to most.
