This book is must reading for all sports fans, especially those that live in cities that lost teams due to relocation as many teams have moved in the last 20 years.
John F. Steadman, a veteran beat writer who covered the Baltimore Colts for over 50 years tells why the Colts moved in the middle of the night - and in a snow blizzard no less. He covers the pain and agony and how one man raped an entire city and cut it's heart out at the same time.
Steadman tells how the Colts were bought by Robert Irsay who single handedly dismantled one of pro football's storied franchies into the laughing stock of sports, and then shopped it all over the country for over a decade until he found a home in Indiannapolis, Indianna. Then there was the agony of what Baltimoreans call "football purgatory," - not having a team for twelve years.
Then, suddenly Art Modell, owner of the Cleveland Browns shocked the nation and moved his team from Cleveland to Baltimore in 1995 after that city built a new stadium for its baseball team. Steadman gives details on why both owners relocated, which was, a lucrative and brand new stadium deal.
Steadman, not only describes the joy Baltimoreans had on receiving a new team but also how many old Colts fans had mixed feelings due to stealing another team. Afterall, that's how they lost their team. They felt like two-bit prostitutes but the NFL made them do it when it selected other cities during their expansion process instead of giving a team that Baltimore so richly deserved - especially since it had most money on the table..
Baltimore finally got back into pro football by blasting its way in and finding glory just five years later by winning Super Bowl 35..
Again, this is must reading for all sports fans, not just football fans.
