The Brynners In Far East Russia And Beyond
(Rock Brynner)

Publicidade
This book caught my attention as I had recently seen the movie The King and I and was fascinated by Yul Brynner who played the role of King Siam in the movie. The book by Rock Brynner - Yul's son ,is a family biography . It is a tale of four generations of the Brynner dynasty.
The saga starts with Jules Brynner born in Vladivostok in Far East Russia and ends with the return of Rock Brynner to Vladivostok after the end of the Cold War.Jules Brynner was born in Switzerland and belonged to a simle Lutheran family. Early in life he left home and joined a pirate ship to Shangai and later to Yokohoma . Hard working and an acute businessman , he created a prosperous shipping agency in Far Eastern Russia . In 1970 , on arriving in Vladivostok he set about creating a port for his shipping company and eventually worked his way up to become one of its wealthiest citizens .
In 1882 , he married Nataliya Kurkutova, from whom he had six children among them Boris Julievitch - the father of Yul . In the meantime his empire increased to include vast timber holdings and the famous Tetukhe mines.
Boris was a handsome man and an heir to great wealth. He married Maria Blagovidova and had two children from her - Vera and Yul (1920). With the onset of the Communist Revolution, and the collapse of the Russian Empire , the great empire of Jules also came to an end . With the death of Jules , his son Boris moved his family to Habin ( at that time controlled by the Chinese). Boris however stayed behind to to rescue his interests and made frequent trips to Moscow to keep his mines alive.
In Moscow he fell in love with Katya Kornakoa , a talented and beautiful actress . However the Brynners eventually lost all their wealth to the Soviet revolution and fled from there.
Meanwhile, Yul , his sister and mother left Habin and moved to Paris. Yul left home and took off with a family of gypsies. He sang Russian folk songs and played the guitar in nightclubs for sometime . He also worked as a life guard for a while and later became a trapeze artist in a circus.
He finally took to theatre under Michael Chekow . On the invasion of France by Hitler , his family fled to new York, where Yul began his career as a Broadway star in Lute Song . He received fame and adolation after his role in the movie The King and I .
Yul is well known for his affair with Marlene Dietrich who was 41 when he was 21 . His romance with her continued for two decades now on - now off but always passionate and relentless.
Rock Brynner is a historian.
