Sitting absorbing the meaning of a piece is quite a banal method of interpretation. Some forms of theatre do not even allow you to be able to absorb meaning. By it?s very nature theatre must project meaning, even if the meaning projected is un-intentional on behalf of the performers.
Perhaps theatre is not about the performers and the meaning? Maybe it is about the overall experience of the audience?
You can take away an audience and still be left with a performer? No because surely without an audience the performer becomes merely a person? The mixture of both audience and performer.

Construction is what we judge everything against.

An audience should be the most important people when making theatre. Or perhaps only when making drama.
