All Life Infront Of Him
(Emil Azaar)
This 250 p. masterpiece is a great represantative of this great author's work. First published in France, 1975, this book had immidiaty become world wide distrebuted and had a great impact on the general public's opinion. Muhamed, who rather be called Momo, is raised as a muslim by a Jewish Holocost survivar old lady called Roza, a former prostitute now taking care of illigaly born prostitutes' children in a bad nabourhood in Paris. Momo's first great disapoitment is to learn that Roza is actually taking care of him not for his love but for a 300 franks a month. In addition to Momo Roza is looking after some 10 other kids, some of them for the day of for a short periode of time. Momo is the only kid without a known mother, and seems to be the oldest and the longest to stay among all the children under Roza's care. Momo is telling us about his different experiences, not necesarly in a chronological order and many times in a childlike, rethorically poor manner. Through his experiences we learn about Momo's life history, his origins and the story of his parents, the harsh reality of the fugetive's naboorhood and the unique story of Roza. The light motive of this book is the frase "maybe I'll visit him sometime", pointing on the hope he does not loose facing horrible experiences, which is eplyed in the name of the book, "all life infront of him". The plot is all builted around Roza's dyeing, with lots of flashbacks and distractions as said below. Among the information gradually given to us by those flashbacks is: Momo's father, a pimp, killed Momo's mother, one of his prostitutes, and then decleard menthaly ill and puted into a siciatric hospital. After 11 years there, he returns, tell Momo that he is 4 years older than he thinks he is (14) and dyes of a hard attack when Rosa refuses to hand Momo to him. Aparantly Rosa has lyed to Momo about his real age from the fear that he will leave her earlier.Close to Rosa's death, they recieve help from Lola, a Sengalian Boxing champion now working as a prostitute in the Boulone forest and other nabours. Another important character is Doctor Katz, a Jewish doctor taking care of Momo and Roza. The author's name is just a pen name, and his real identety remains secret. It is only known that he is 36 and lives somewhere in the south of France. Endless theories about his true identety exist, some wilder then others.
