Theme Of "mending Walls"
(Smiran)

Publicidade
"Mending Wall" is one of the greatest poem written by Robert Frost. It was included in North Of Boston. The poem begins as a dramatic monologue in which only the speaker is evident throughout the poem. The main theme of the poem is the contradiction between the speaker and his old neighbor.

The poem begins in delight as,Something there is that doesnt love a wall and ends in a note of advice. The theory of poetry that Frost believed was that it begins with delight and ends in wisdom. The same theory is depicted in this poem too.It was a usual custom for the speaker, who is probably the poet and his neighbor to get together during winter to reconstruct the walls which seperated their boundary. The speaker is against rebuilding walls. But his neighbor who is an old England farmer insists on constructing the wall.Nothing much is known about the neighbor. It is only through the words of the poet that we understand that the neighbor is an orthodox and conventional person.

The speaker believes that there is no need for a wall since we believe in universal brotherhood. But the neighbor tells him that good fences make good neighbors. It was a dictum which the neighbor's father had transmuted to him.He firmly believes in this idiom. This contradiction forms the major theme of the poem. The poet offers no conclusion for the readers and the decision is left to the readers.

The poem is presented in the most beautiful manner and is written in blank verse with Iambic pentametre. The beautiful poem suggests the conflict in building a wall. The poet firmly believes that nature hates all kind of walls while the neighbor disagrees with him telling that good fences make good neighbors. The poem speaks a lot about the unconventional poet, Robert Frost. He loved nature very much. But unlike Wordsworth he also agreed with the terrific powers of nature.
