The Da Vinci Code
(Dan Brown)

Publicidade
This is going to be difficult.

Robert Langdon is an American symbologist in Paris on business. He is called into The Louvre in the middle of the night to help unravel strange codes and clues found on the body and in the vicinity of murdered curator.

The plot progresses at high speed as Langdon and his beautiful accomplice Sophie Neveu travel through the streets of Paris, into the French countryside followed by air dash to England and then onto the streets of London. The story hinges on a cunning mixture of truth and controversial fiction, using names of prominent historical figures like Sir Isaac Newton and Victor Hugo and important works of art like The Last Supper and Mona Lisa.

The writing is superb to say the least but the story hinges on certain flimsy assumptions, sudden weird flashes of insight and several grotesque coincidences that rescue the plot from dead ends. In the end, the fast paced story peters out into a flaccid rag. Do Langdon and Neveu manage to decipher the codes? Well that depends on whether the reader is interested in the codes and clues or just wants to be led through what is really an interminably long discourse on whether Jesus really married Mary Magdalene and left a surviving blood line; a discourse that is spiced up by inclusion of Swiss Banks, Leonardo da Vinci and transatlantic collect calls.

No doubt readers and reviewers have been blinded by the power of Brown?s story telling ability and by his invoking the mystery of the romance found in clouded history ? The Holy Grail, Opus Dei, the Knights Templar and Mary Magdalene ? and in the use of esoteric terms like Phi, Cryptex and Pentacle. But a dispassionate analysis of the book shows it to be extremely superficial and lacking in any real substance.
