Publicidade
"Siddhartha" written by Herman Hesse is a book which reflects Eastern philosophy. It is the story of a young man who leaves his family in order to find eternal bliss. But the story reveals that a man cannot be a saint unless he understands and goes through all the phases in an individual's life.According to the Hindu mythology, there are four stages in the life of an individual They are Brahmacharyam(boyhood), Gaarhasthyam(Youth), Vaanaprastham(married life) and finally comes Sanyasam(saintliness). Therefore the play suggests that without going through the first three stages, one cannot attain the final stage. The story starts with the relation of the two friends Siddhartha and Govinda. But we should never mistake the protagonist Siddhartha with the actual Buddha.

In the midst of his life, Siddhartha meets the Samanas and prepares to join him.Govinda who is a follower of Siddhartha also joins the Samanas. But after two three years Siddhartha leaves the Samans and goes to the enlightened Buddha where his preachings raffle the minds of Siddhartha nd Govinda.Govinda who is convinced of Buddha's teaching decides to remain there while Siddhartha continues his journey.By the time, Siddhartha turns out into a normal human being where feelings upgrade his normal passions. He mets Kamala, the courtesan and the merchant Kamaswami.Through these two people Siddhartha realizes the importance of Love and money. But though he understand these terms, he was not still able to identify the actual eternal bliss. So he decides to leave them and continue his journey. His journey goes for another five years and in the mean time he meets a ferryman named Vasudeva who inculcates new values to Sidddhartha.

It was during this time that the news flashed that Buddha is about to die and many people from many areas come to visit Buddha.Among them is seen Kamala and a young boy, who is Siddhartha's son.But Kamala dies off a snake bite and the boy is left to his father, Sidhhartha. But the boy who cant cop up with the ways of his father leaves him.By the time Vasusdeva teaches him that the river beside their home could teach him a lot. Finally when Vasudeva leaves to the forest for good, Siddhartha attains what he pined for a long time.At this juncture when Govinda comes to Siddhartha, both realizes that they have attained what they wished for.The play reveals the fact that siddhartha had to go through the first three stages mentioned above in order to reach the final stage. He at first wished for saintliness but he was not able to achieve it without covering the first three aspects.Once he went through the first three stages, he was able to reach the world of eternal bliss which he wished most.It is a worthful piece which everyone should read.
