The Image Of The City
(Kevin Lynch)
The workmanship, the image of city, is the result of a pilot study that describ and it analyzes tree american different cities - Boston, LA and Jersey city - from the interpretation that of them makes a certain number of the inhabitants of each city. The ?registes images? had been referenciadas in a set of five main elements considered estruturantes in the representation of the city: the ways, that they assure the connection between a point and another one; the limits, that they represent the border between zones of the city that have a distinct existence; the marker points, buildings, statues, parks, that they constitute the identifiable places and that generically they inform the system of orientation in a city; the crossings, intersecção points, of ticket of an activity for another one (the station of the convoys and the metropolitan, the airport) finally, the quarters essentially demarcated by the recognition of carácter homogéneo. The way as these five categories of elements enter in relation with the ?imaginabilidade? of a city, with the capacity to provoke a suggestion on the spectators and to be consolidated in its memories, it constitutes the essential scope of this study. Through photographs and interviews to the citizens, Lynch read and interpreted the space fragmentos chosen in each city - the urban centers. It tried to perceive as the inhabitants if they guided, as they were felt when they skirted a street, when they were come close to a crossing, which the sensation before a building or one another urban element. It inquired what selected its directions when they went to work or when they came back the house, that type of feelings the city blunted to them; at last, the relation of the human being and the city as were perceived for the first one.?The city is a construction in the space (?)? [1], but so vast that our directions leave to reach the space when this exists more beyond. We apprehend, therefore, the city for parts and in this process our mind holds back the memories and the meanings most important, that more in they mark them throughout the life, in some way associating them it the space that supports these events physically; thus relations with parts of the city are established, which if they transform into most significant.
