Fountainhead
(ayn rand)
fountainhead is one of the best selling fiction books of all times.it s author ayn rand shot into limelite soon after the publishing of fountainhead.it is one of the best known sources and the introductory propaganda vehicle for her philosophy-objectivism.even though this book contains radical and shocking ideas about the philosophy of life,it neverthless became a huge publishing success owing to the modernistic storyline.set in the early 1920's,it traces the life and work of howard roark,a young architect with a brilliant mind ,expelled from his architecture school because of his refusal to abide by the old styles of architecture which he believes is not relevant to the present day world.his anti parallel character is peter keating,a classmate in his college who does not think twice before bending to anybody for or to win people's favour.as he finishes top in his class , he is asked to join a top architectural firm,'francon and heyer' in new york while roark packs his bags to train under a once famous but now in bad times architect by the name henry cameron.a reluctant henry who was once the top architect in the country agrees to hire roark for a meagre salary.cameron is soon impressed by roark s genius and urges him to join some other firm where he could get a better salary but roark refuses stating that he could never work in a firm which does not fit into his principles of his architectural styles. it is here that ayn rand ought to be congratulated for potraying roark not as an arrogant person but as an innocent being who expect his world to be like he wants it to be oblivious of his surroundings or other people.during this time, peter keating ascends up the ladder in francon and heyer and is soon a well known architect who designs building for the public to see not for the tenants commforts.and all the parties involved are satisfied because they are more concerned about the publics comments than about their comforts.enters ellsworth toohey,an art crtic who recognizes the ability of roark but who is firm in his belief that mediocrity ought to be encouraged along with dominique francon,a columnist for a famous newspaper on architecure,a breathtaking beauty but who is unfortunately intelligent enough to recognise that a genius like roark will only be ridiculed by the public, criticizes whatever building he constructs in her column hoping that one day he will realise how his genius is wasted on the public.at that time, henry cameron falls ill and is forced to retire from his work or rather the lack of it.with him goes roark's job . henry roark being disilluioned by the trash that architectural firms bring out in the name of designs , works as a quarryman in a quarry owned by francon.dominque francon incidentally sees him and from there starts a tumultous love affair which change the life and work of roark, keating, toohey and the owner of the newspaper for which dominque and toohey work as columnists,a millionarie womanizer and buisnessman by the name of gail wynand.a book that will change the way you look at life people . a must read for any book lover ..................
